From workwear to backpack: how De Kemphaan gives old clothing a new lease of life

Orange workwear upcycled into a sustainable backpack.

FROM WASTE TO VALUABLE PRODUCTS

At De Kemphaan, we believe in the power of transformation: turning discarded materials into something beautiful and useful. By combining used workwear with creative design and social production, we create unique, high-quality products that tell a story. Every piece of workwear that passes through our textile workshop is given a second life as something new – such as a stylish and functional backpack.

We focus on upcycling because reusing existing materials drastically reduces the impact on the environment. By preserving original details such as pockets, zippers, and labels, we make the story of the old product visible in the new one. This is not only a circular statement but also a call to others: how can you contribute to a more sustainable future?

A sustainable solution for safety clothing

From 2025, new European legislation will mark an important step in reducing textile waste. Textile companies will be required to collect used clothing for reuse or recycling. This offers enormous opportunities to develop sustainable alternatives, and De Kemphaan is keen to respond to this.

With our latest project, we transform used workwear – such as trousers and jackets – into practical and stylish backpacks. We are doing this at the request of a client, but the possibilities extend further.

Think of organizations such as the fire department, police, civil protection, and ambulance and rescue services, which use a lot of safety clothing. By giving these garments a new life, they too can contribute to a circular economy and comply with the new regulations.

The Process: From Work JACKET to Backpack

How do we work? The collected discarded trousers and jackets from companies arrive at our facility, after which our team gets to work:

  1. Sorting
All garments are carefully sorted and checked for imperfections to be ready for processing.

  2. Design and cutting
Our designers create patterns that make optimal use of the material. We reuse original details such as pockets, zippers, and labels to give each product a unique character.

  3. Stitching and finishing
In our stitching workshop, the parts are assembled into a finished backpack. We pay extra attention to durability and strength, ensuring the end product is just as reliable as the original workwear.

“First I protected you,   now I carry your things”

This backpack project is just one example of how we can reuse materials and add value. It is not De Kemphaan’s first upcycling project. For instance, we previously transformed old tents into fitting room curtains for stores such as A.S. Adventure.

Every project, no matter how large or small, contributes to our mission: making an impact by combining creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship.

A Call for Collaboration: Let Your Reclaimed Clothing Get a New Life

Whether you are a government agency, a supplier of safety clothing, or a company in construction or logistics, at De Kemphaan you can count on a partner that gives your used textiles a new life. Together, we make sustainability a tangible reality and contribute to a cleaner future.

At De Kemphaan, it is about more than just production; it is about creating value for people and the environment. Our textile workshop works with people who are distanced from the labor market. By offering them opportunities, we create not only sustainable products but also sustainable employment.
